When was the last time you visited the dentist? Has it been six months or more? If it has, then you are sorely overdue for your next visit. Getting your teeth cleaned twice a year sounds unpleasant, but it isn’t as scary as it seems. In fact, it’s good for you, so don’t put it off!
Brushing and Flossing Aren’t Enough
As important as brushing and flossing are, you shouldn’t stop there. It’s also important to use mouthwash and sometimes use water flossers to get at the spots where the brush and toothpaste can’t reach, especially if you dislike using conventional floss to help clean your teeth at home. Even when you are responsible about brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash, there will still be food residue in your mouth. Not only can this give you bad breath, but it can lead to gum disease and tooth decay if left unaddressed as well.
Going to the Dentist
For these reasons, it’s important to see your dentist. Preventative care is worth an ounce of cure. Plus, doing something now will spare you pain and a hit to the wallet later, even if you have excellent dental insurance. What are some of the reasons why you might not have visited your dentist until now? Well, for one thing, you might not have had the time. With how busy our lives are these days, it is certainly understandable. The other complication could be a lack of funds, but again, with the right dental insurance you might only have to pay a small copay or you won’t have to pay anything at all! Imagine how convenient that is. Also, the American Dental Association, or ADA, recommends that you see your dentist twice a year. So if your last appointment was in February, you should go again in August. This guideline does change given certain circumstances. If you have gum disease, then you should go every three to four months instead.
What Happens Next
By ignoring the condition of your teeth, you run the risk of developing gum disease or other unpleasant conditions. Plaque and cavities will build up more quickly, and your teeth will be more sensitive, which means that you won’t be able to enjoy some of your favorite foods anymore!
