Even the most careful brusher, who flosses regularly and follows all the rules of proper tooth care, can suffer from tooth pain. This is because not all tooth pain is caused by cavities! While it is true that toothaches are most commonly the result of a cavity, there are a few other things you should consider.
Tooth Sensitivity
As enamel wears down, it can lead to tooth sensitivity that causes pain when your teeth are exposed to hot or cold temperatures. While this does require a dental examination to be sure, while you’re waiting for an appointment, you can try switching to a soft-bristled toothbrush and a sensitive tooth toothpaste to be safe.
If It’s More Severe
In the event that you have sharp, stabbing pain when you bite down, it may be a sign of a cracked tooth. If the pain you have is incessant and throbbing, you may have an infection or abscessed tooth. If your wisdom teeth have not been removed and have shifted or started to grow in at an incorrect angle, you may begin to develop all sorts of pains depending on the way they are growing. Some signs that you may have wisdom tooth problems include jaw pain, headaches, and tension in the mouth. No matter what symptoms of these issues you have, it’s important to see a dentist as soon as possible as all three can lead to severe infections.
When It’s Not Your Teeth
While it is less common, some causes for tooth and mouth pain come from very different sources. If you notice that you have pain in your upper teeth and in your face on both sides, this could be a sign that you have a sinus infection such as sinusitis. Additionally, arthritis of the jaw, teeth grinding, and even jaw injury can cause pain that has nothing to do with cavities. No matter what type of pain you have, and how intermittent or intense it is, heading to a dentist as soon as possible is always the best solution. Not only can your dentist help identify the source of your pain and fix it, but they can prevent it from becoming worse.
