Why Do Your Teeth Hurt When You Eat Something Sweet?

Whether you are a big fan of cake or you enjoy putting sugar in your coffee, your teeth might not agree.

Whether you are a big fan of cake or you enjoy putting sugar in your coffee, your teeth might not agree. In fact, there are many reasons why your teeth could hurt whenever you eat or drink something sweet. Even if your teeth never give you any pain besides when you indulge in a sweet, here’s why sugar might set them off.

Sensitive Teeth

It’s entirely possible for your teeth to be more sensitive to sweets than other flavors. For example, your teeth could hurt more than usual when you sip cold water or attempt to put a spoonful of steaming soup in your mouth. But even worse is when sweets do this to your teeth. You feel a very intense pain that will go away after a few minutes, but until then, it’s an unpleasant sensation. What could do this to your mouth? Maybe you brush too frequently or too hard, or maybe it’s time to discard your toothbrush and switch to a new one instead.

Injuries

Another reason that sweet things could hurt your teeth is because of serious injury. If you’ve ever damaged your teeth, that could change how they react to certain foods. If you’ve sustained an injury, either to your mouth or to your teeth, have it checked out right away. Teeth cleaning and root polishing shouldn’t be painful, but these procedures could unintentionally damage your teeth and make them more vulnerable and sensitive, too.

Unhealthy Eating

Lastly, think about your diet. Although you might always stick to it, a healthy diet improves your overall well-being. Don’t neglect to drink that orange juice in the morning, and eat as many fruits and vegetables as you can. Your mouth and your body will thank you if you get enough vitamin C into your system. And be sure to take good care of both your dental and oral care needs, as tooth decay can also become a problem.
