Root canal treatment is a dental procedure that positively affects the lives of thousands and thousands of dental patients.

Root canals are dental procedures that positively affect the lives of thousands and thousands of dental patients. They have somewhat of a scary reputation, but the actual process is straightforward and painless. If a dentist tells you that you need a root canal, please don’t put it off out of fear! This post will list some telltale signs of a patient in need of this procedure.

Anatomy of the Root Canal

The first thing to understand about root canal treatment is what issues we address by doing it. The tooth’s root is the tissue within the gums that anchors it and connects it to the nervous and circulatory systems. The root canal is the inner portion of the root where the nerves and blood vessels live. A number of things can cause infections in the root canal, but no matter what, they are very painful and hazardous to overall health. Root canal treatment lets you keep the natural tooth and resume normal dental hygiene, which is the outcome that dentists typically strive for in their patients’ lives.

Decay

If a tooth has deep decay, then a dentist will recognize that when they see any abscesses, swelling, pimples on the gums, or discolored gums. Tooth decay leads to bacteria multiplying in the damaged area and causing infection and inflammation. When this goes on for some time, it becomes necessary to remove all of the infected tissue with root canal treatment.

Repeated procedures

The more invasive procedures a tooth goes through, the more vulnerable it becomes to damage from everyday use. If a tooth becomes damaged so that it is extra sensitive to temperature and other sensations, then it may be necessary to remove the pulp from the root canal. Removing the pulp eliminates sensitivity because it contains all of the nervous tissue inside the tooth. In adult teeth, this tissue is mostly unnecessary for function and health.

Chips and Cracks

It happens to the best of us; we trip, fall, and land flat on our faces. If you chip or crack a tooth due to some mishap, then this usually isn’t a big deal as long as you get to a dentist to ensure that no deep damage has been done. However, if you find that the broken tooth causes you pain and doesn’t allow you to enjoy eating, then having root canal treatment done might be your best option. Root canals are generally less expensive than other options like crowns and bridges.
