Since you’re using your toothbrush 2-3 times per day, you want to make sure it’s in good working order. As a general rule, you should be replacing your toothbrush every three months no matter what. There are some situations, however, when you may want to replace it sooner. Do you think it might be time to replace your toothbrush? Ask yourself these questions!
How do the bristles look?
Examine the bristles of your toothbrush. They should all be straight and un-frayed. If any bristles appear to be bent or frayed, it’s time for a new one. Even if it’s just one or two, that can still alter the performance of the brush.
Is there debris on the toothbrush?
It’s actually pretty common for toothpaste to build up on a toothbrush. No matter how well you rinse it when you’re finished with it, there can still be some toothpaste left behind. If you find residue built up that won’t come off with a rinse, it’s time for a replacement.
Were you sick recently?
When you’re sick, you have all kinds of germs in your mouth. Once you get over the sickness, it’s time for a new toothbrush. If you continue to use the old one, you risk re-infecting yourself.
Did your toothbrush touch someone else’s?
You should never let your toothbrush touch someone else’s, even if that person is a significant other. You never know what kinds of germs are lurking on someone else’s toothbrush!
Was it stored properly?
Proper storage is essential for your toothbrush. It should be stored somewhere that it can air out and dry properly. Placing it in a drawer or inside something invites bacteria growth.
Do you remember the last time you replaced it?
If you don’t remember the last time you got a new brush, you should definitely get a replacement. Even if you think it was less than three months ago, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
