How often do you think about the pH level of your mouth? Not often, most likely; you probably don’t even think that has any effect on your dental health. When you balance out the pH, it’s good for your teeth and your gums. Let’s find out more.
Unhealthy Levels
As you might remember from science class, a neutral pH level is 7.0. If it starts to go below that, then problems start. If your mouth falls below 5.5, that’s when tooth decay sets in. If the pH is too low for too long, it can cause new cavities to form and help any existing cavities get worse.
Why It’s Important
You might be wondering why it’s important to keep a balanced pH level in your mouth. When you do, there’s a perfect balance of the bacteria in your mouth. There are bacteria that will actually benefit you, such as probiotics, which can help you digest. Other bacteria help keep your mouth and gums safe. Then there are the troublemakers that can cause bleeding gums and bad breath, both of which can be unpleasant and uncomfortable to experience.
Changing the pH Level
Here are some things you can do to change the pH level of your mouth:
- Eat More Veggies: Yes, eating more vegetables can help alter the pH level of your mouth. Not only will it improve your dental health, but every other part of your body will start feeling better also. Some veggies are acidic and others are basic, or alkaline. You need to eat both, so choose options such as kale, spinach, and broccoli.
- Stay Away from Bread: Even if you love bread, that doesn’t mean it will love you back. Most grains used for bread are acidic.
- Don’t Use Artificial Sweeteners: Even if you have diabetes or need to watch your sugar intake, using artificial sweeteners isn’t the way to go. Honey and xylitol are acidic.
- Limit Condiment Consumption: Ketchup, mustard, and barbecue sauce might be some of your favorite toppings, both when it comes to your dental health, don’t overindulge.
