Are your teeth looking a little longer than they used to? It’s not because your teeth have grown. The likely answer is that your gums are receding, which exposes the bottom of the teeth, which are usually covered up by the gums. The problem with gum recession, aside from cosmetic appearance, is that it allows bacteria to get into gaps that start to pop up in between your teeth and gums. These bacteria can cause cavities, tooth decay, further gum recession, and a host of other oral health concerns. Receding gums is a problem that occurs slowly over time. There are several different causes of gum recession, which we’ll cover in this week’s blog.
The Causes of Gum Recession
Brushing Too Hard
Brushing your teeth too hard can cause your gums to recede. Use a lighter stroke. It will be easier on your teeth and gums, and actually does the job better, because it allows the bristles to move more freely.
Gum Disease
Gum recession is one of the many side effects of gum disease and other periodontal diseases. In addition, about 30% of people are more likely to contract gum disease due to their genes.
Poor Oral Health Habits
Not taking good care of your teeth and gums by brushing and flossing can lead to any number of dental problems, one of which is receding gums.
Teeth Grinding
People who grind their teeth are more likely to suffer from receding gums, as teeth grinding puts excessive force on the teeth. A misaligned bite or crooked teeth can cause the same problem of excessive force, leading to receding gums.
Hormonal Changes
If the body is going through hormonal changes, it could make gums more vulnerable to recession.
Tobacco Use
Gum recession is one of the many health problems associated with tobacco use, especially chewing tobacco.
So how do you avoid gum recession? The best line of defense is a good oral hygiene routine. Brush twice a day and floss once a day to prevent problems such as plaque and bacteria buildup which can lead to gum recession. If your gums are receding, consult your local Olney dentist today.
