Should Adults Get Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are a commonly used dentistry technique used to protect the molars and sometimes premolars from cavities and tooth decay. Most kids have sealants, but not as many adults do. Learn why, and if adults should get dental sealants in this week’s blog.

Dental Sealants

The Process

The sealant is a thin plastic coating applied to the molars and sometimes the premolars as well. The teeth that are going to be sealed are cleaned and dried, and cotton is placed around the teeth to keep them dry during the procedure. Next, the dentist applies an acid solution on the teeth which roughens them slightly. This gives the sealant a better surface to bond to. After another rinsing and drying, the sealant is painted onto the chewing surface of the teeth and hardened with a curing light. Sealants can last for up to 10 years, but can also be chipped, and may need to be fixed during a regular checkup.

Why Do Kids Get Their Teeth Sealed?

Once the permanent teeth come in, they are very jagged and unworn since they’re brand new. This means that the chewing surfaces are uneven and have lots of nooks and crannies where food particles can hide and contribute to decay. Sealants are used to fill in these surfaces and prevent food from getting stuck in them. This in turn helps prevent plaque, cavities, and other unwanted dental problems.

Should Adults Get Their Teeth Sealed?

Over time, teeth get worn down, and the chewing surfaces of your molars and premolars evens out. By the time you’re an adult, those nooks and crannies are much less prominent, and thus are less of a risk for trapping food. For this reason, most adults don’t need to get their teeth sealed. However, everyone’s mouth is different, and some people still may have a chewing surface that is more condusive to trapping food well into adulthood. Your dentist can advise you as to whether or not you would benefit from sealants.
