Pregnant? How to Maintain your Dental Health

Make sure you don’t neglect your own dental health while pregnant!

Planning for a baby’s arrival can take up a lot of time and worry. While moms-to-be have a lot on their minds, they should neglect the basics of their own health, including their dental health. You may have many questions about keeping your teeth clean while pregnant, and today we’re going to have some answers for you.

Don’t Neglect Your Dental Needs

Many pregnant women are afraid of having some dental problems treated during pregnancy. For instance, you may have a cavity that you’re putting off getting filled, or you need anesthesia for a more serious problem but fear exposing the fetus to it. But according to the Journal of the American Dental Association, dental procedures that use local anesthetics are safe for pregnant women. You should also not put off or skip any visits to your dentist. Pregnancy increases your risk of tooth decay – women eat more carbs and don’t brush their teeth as often because of morning sickness and the increased risk of bleeding gums.

Procedures That Can Be Done While Pregnant

Which dental procedures can be performed when pregnant? You’re clear to have three of the most common procedures done – root canals, tooth extractions, and cavity fillings. You’re also allowed to have x-rays done as the radiation levels used are low, and you’ll be wearing a lead apron to cover your body and protect the fetus.

Let Your Dentist Know About Your Pregnancy

As soon as you know that you’re pregnant, let your dentist know, even if you decide to wait to reveal this information to your family. Also give your dentist a list of any medications you’re taking so that your dentist and physician can consult on any appropriate medications if needed.

Scheduling Visits to your Dentist

Plan on visiting your dentist for checkups throughout your pregnancy. If you’re planning on becoming pregnant in the near future, schedule a visit beforehand so that any necessary procedures can be done prior to the conception process. Planning your checkups ahead of time can also decrease the risk of premature birth or having a baby with low birth weight. Usually, regular checkups should be planned for the second trimester as anything later in the third trimester can increase this risk of premature delivery.
